More writing news...

I’m a freelance feature writer, copywriter and author based in the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham.

The scope of my writing is very broad, including business-related copywriting, features and articles for magazines, and researching and writing a growing number of books on the theme of social history.

Feel free to browse my website.  Here you can find out more about me and my freelance writing, look at examples of my features and articles, read about my social history books and catch up with my news on recent writing projects.

Please contact me if you have any feedback or queries about my writing or this website, or if you would like to commission me for a writing project.  I’d love to hear from you!

Feature writing

I write magazine features and articles for a wide variety of publications including Period House, Limited Edition and BBC History.  I specialise in writing about history and heritage, homes and interiors, education, the environment and children’s reference.

"Michelle has written for the Essential Publishing titles EKBB and Period House for over ten years.  I have always found her features are well written and researched, and she always meets our deadlines."

George Player, Editor, Period House

Copywriting

I also undertake copywriting for small businesses and individuals.  I write mailers, press releases, brochures and websites for projects large and small.  I pride myself on being able to tailor my writing to specific audiences, on time and within budget.

"Michelle has developed website copy for many of Arrowsmith Marketing's clients.  I can rely on her to produce content that suits the customer's industry and style of business, quickly and effectively."

Gareth Edwards, Director, Arrowsmith Marketing

Social history books

As the author of three non-fiction social history books, I am passionate about history in all its forms, including family history and local history.  My books include Christmas Cards (Shire, 1999), Life in the Victorian and Edwardian Workhouse (Tempus, April 2007) and Prison Life in Victorian England (Tempus, November 2007).

“Daily life…is recounted in this book with both historical detail and sympathy, aided in both aspects by numerous first-person accounts and many specific details from workhouses around the country.”
